History of Chemistry

What Is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the science of the composition, structure, properties and interactions of matter. It is believed that the word 'chemistry' originates from the Arabic word al-kaminya, which means 'the art of transforming metals'. As in all other fields of science, the knowledge of chemistry is gained through the scientific method. Any form of matter is considered as a chemical.

Why Study Chemistry?

Because understanding chemistry assists you to master everything around you. Doing laundry or cooking is chemistry. Anything you can feel, taste or smell is definitely a chemical. Once you study chemistry, you come to know a bit about how exactly things work. Chemistry isn't magic formula, crappy to everyone but a scientist. It's the description for everyday things, such as why plastic releases odor when burnt or what substance is harmful to us. If you know some chemistry, you can easily make educated options about daily products that you make use of.

What is the Definition of Chemistry?

In the past, the description of chemistry has altered over time, as new breakthroughs and theories are added into the science. Demonstrated below are some of the common definitions used by various known chemists:

  • In 330, alchemy was defined as the study of waters, motion, growth, embodying and disembodying by Zosimos.

  • In 1661, Boyle defined chymistry as the concepts of mixture bodies.

  • In 1663, Glaser emphasized on a scientific art for chymistry. It is the study of breaking down substances, and draw them from the various compounds on their composition, and putting them together again, then upgrade them.

  • In 1837, Dumas defines chemistry as the science of the laws and effects of molecular forces.

  • In 1947, Pauling explained chemistry as the study of the structure, properties and the reaction that substances undergoes.

  • In 1998, the definition of chemistry has shortened to the study of matter and the changes it experiences by Chang.
